Issue:

You have Windows 2003 Server installed in a boot from SAN configuration and would like to change the boot device to another disk array or local disk.

Solution:

The solution is really just a matter of backing up the current OS, reinstalling the OS onto the new boot device, and restoring the original OS.  The following is just a high level overview the process.

1)      Use NTBackup to backup the OS Partition and System State.

a.       Save the backup file to a partition or server that will be available after reconfiguration.

2)      Record existing Drive letter assignments.

3)      Reboot Server

4)      Reconfigure the HBAs to boot from the new LDEV.

a.       Disable existing SAN boot disk

                                                               i.      Do this by disconnecting the cable, removing the HBA, or reconfiguring the HBA.

5)      Re-install the same OS version to the new SAN boot disk.

a.       Minimal configuration is needed.

b.      Computer name can be anything.

c.       Do not add to domain.

d.      Apply Service Packs as needed.

6)      Reboot server

7)      Assign previous drives the same drive letters as before

8)      Run NTBackup and restore the previous OS

a.       Restore over newly installed OS

b.      Restore System State

9)      Reboot

10)  Verify new configuration works correctly.
