The Truth about Security Exploits on Windows Servers

In this article I will discuss common misconceptions about Security Exploits and try to better inform Network Administrators about what Security Exploits are and how they can be limited in scope.  Most IT Managers and Network Administrators don’t really understand what a Security Exploit is or how an attacker uses it.  Because of this lack of understanding common misconceptions and overwhelming fears are very pervasive in our industry.

Disk I/O Tutorial Part 1: The Basic Concepts of Disk I/O

This tutorial seeks to explain the basic concepts of Input / Output (aka: IO or I/O) operations to disk located on a local disk or a Storage Area Network.  After we explain what makes up the basic I/O we look at how to determine an application’s standard IO size and then how to determine the IOPS (IOs per second) of an application or server.

Understanding the SDDL permissions in the ACE_String

In this article I will break down the ACE_String portion of the SDDL format and show how permissions are configured to secure a variety of objects.  I will aslo explain how this key component of the SDDL format is used to apply security to any object in Windows Operating System that implements a standard 32 bit access mask (bits number 0 – 31).

The Golden Rules of Permissions Administration

The following are what I call the Golden Rules of Permissions Administration.  These rules were developed through years of file server administration but generally apply to any application administration like SQL Server, Sharepoint server, Active Directory, etc.

Windows 2003 DNS Best Practices

This is a collection of real world DNS best practices for mid to large size companies.  Small companies that are growing should also follow these practices to save them growth pains in the future.  The basic idea behind most of the best practices provided is to limit server and client side DNS administration.  As an added benefit following these practices will reduce the amount of documentation required on your DNS environment by making DNS self documenting.  You may also notice that these practices build upon each other.  By doing one it makes the next one possible or easier to do.

How to Performance Test VBScript code for Performance Optimization

So you want to optimize your VBScript code to increase performance.  I have written this article to explain the basic process and perform a demonstration.   This will hopefully help you devise a way to performance test and performance optimize your code.

Programming and Scripting Techniques for Windows Administrators

In this article I will be discussing methods that network administrators can use to improve their scripting ability and develop script libraries that will eventually lead to their ability to develop larger and more complicated projects

In this article I will be covering some basic and advanced performance optimizations for VBScript, as well as discussing some common misconceptions developers may have about VBScript performance.
